SZTUers claim 6 first prizes in provincial competition of UMIC

On June 5, the Guangdong divisional finals of the 10th Undergraduate Mechanical Innovation Competition (UMIC) was rounded off at Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU). Launched on May 25, the Guangdong divisional competition was participated by a total of 216 teams from 34 universities and colleges in Guangdong Province. In the end, 32 first prizes, 43 second prizes, 55 third prizes and 86 honorable mentions went to 130 teams that were shortlisted for the finals.

To select the competitive teams for UMIC, SZTU launched the university-level contest in April 2021, with 50 teams formed by more than 200 students from different colleges signing up for it. Through step-by-step selection, 15 teams stood out and were qualified for the Guangdong divisional competition. Finally, SZTU won 6 first prizes, 2 second prizes, 6 third prizes and 1 honorable mention. Among the 24 teams advancing to the national competition, 6 teams were from SZTU, which marked the best result and a record high for the participating institutions of Guangdong Province.

UMIC is one of the most influential and long-standing national competitions in the field of mechanical engineering in China, which is approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China and sponsored by the steering committee of the MOE on mechanical discipline teaching in higher education institutions. The biennial event has been held nine times over the past 18 years. The Guangdong divisional competition of UMIC is undertaken by SZTU this year and sponsored by the steering committee of Guangdong Province on mechanical foundation course teaching in undergraduate institutions. With the theme of “Nature and Harmony”, the competition aims to foster top-notch innovative talents, focuses on the cultivation of high-level applied and interdisciplinary talents, and strives to help students develop global vision, innovation spirit and hands-on ability.
