In the national final of Huawei ICT Competition 2019-2020 Innovation Competition concluded in November, 2020, a student team from the College of Big Data and Internet of Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU) won the second prize in creativity category. The award-winning team members are Luo Kaiwen, Lin Hongrang, and Chen Zhirui. Meanwhile, the instructors of the team, Prof. Xiang Shaohua and Prof. Zhao Jian, were awarded the honor of “Excellent Instructors”.

Focused on tackling key problems in the field of ophthalmology, their award-winning project was to design an intelligent optical coherence tomography (OCT) image diagnosis platform based on federated learning by applying the emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technology to conduct preliminary OCT image screening and assists ophthalmologists in disease diagnosis and treatment. It is an innovative solution in the field of ophthalmology.

Besides the instruction of the two experienced professors, the success of this project was largely due to the three students’ rich real-world experience and skills, which were accumulated by participating a variety of projects in research, innovation and entrepreneurship launched at SZTU. Aiming to build a highland for innovation and entrepreneurship education, SZTU has established Julong College (Innovation and Entrepreneurship College), opened entrepreneurship lessons and built a special team of experienced entrepreneurial mentors. Meanwhile, the university has been actively encouraging students to give full play to their interests and advantages and take part in all kinds of hands-on projects. The College of Big Data and Internet has also introduced innovation and entrepreneurship education into its undergraduate curriculum.

Huawei ICT Competition is an annual competition for college students across the world sponsored by Huawei. It aims to provide an international competition and communication platform for college students, and enhance their information and communications technology (ICT) knowledge, hands-on and application skills as well as innovation awareness.
With more than 600 higher education institutions and over 20,000 students participating in the competition, the Huawei ICT Competition 2019-2020 subdivided its Innovation Competition into two categories for the first time: Production and Creativity. The teams signing up in Creativity must develop scenario solutions to meet the customer demands in specific industries based on Huawei 5G, Cloud, AI and other cutting-edge ICT technologies.
