SZTU and NWU to build a joint research institute

Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU) signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Northwest University (NWU) to build the NWU-SZTU Joint Research Institute on April 12. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Luo Li, first vice-chairman and deputy secretary of the Party Leadership Group of Standing Committee of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress; Guo Lihong, president of NWU; Chang Jiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and vice president of NWU; Prof. Ruan Shuangchen, president of SZTU; and Prof. Xu Gang, vice president of SZTU.

Luo Li said that it was delightful to witness the signing ceremony between NWU and SZTU. NWU boasts many first-class disciplines and majors and a good academic reputation with a long history, while SZTU, as the first application-oriented university in Shenzhen, enjoys strong support from the Ministry of Education, as well as provincial and municipal government. It is hoped that both parties can give full play to their respective advantages and have in-depth cooperation in the future, training more outstanding young men and women for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the western region in China.

NWU President Guo Lihong said that NWU can trace its origins back to Shaanxi Imperial College and Peking Imperial College 119 years ago in 1902. In recent years, NWU has greatly improved its overall core competitiveness and social influence by advancing comprehensive reforms. SZTU is a pioneer in building application-oriented institutions with a high standing point and high standards, resembling Shenzhen, an exemplary city with the spirit of reform. The co-building of the joint research institute would be an opportunity for both sides to carry out comprehensive, high-level, wide-ranging, and multi-level cooperation.

President Ruan Shuangchen said that SZTU is an internationalized, high-level, and exemplary university of applied sciences established by Guangdong Province and Shenzhen Municipality. It has been learning the school-running experience from world-class universities of applied sciences, and actively exploring a new path for undergraduate and postgraduate education. The number of students enrolling at SZTU has been steadily increasing and more disciplines and majors are available for them over the past few years. It is hoped that the two universities can strengthen cooperation in talent training, technological innovation and academic research. At the same time, SZTU will help NWU link up with Shenzhen City, taking advantages of both NWU’s key disciplines and the strong biomedical industry in Pingshan, Shenzhen.

NWU and SZTU will cooperate in three aspects: a) Student and teacher training. The two universities will jointly provide master programs including Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) as well as other professional programs in electronic information, Chinese pharmacy, materials and chemical engineering. Through the joint training mechanism, we can share high-quality human resources and educational resources. b) Scientific research cooperation and exchanges. The two parties will jointly build laboratories to strengthen collaboration and innovation in scientific research. We will also work with enterprises and scientific research institutions in related fields and carry out scientific research cooperation in information security, Internet of Things, big data, environmental engineering, and cultural heritage protection. c) Social services and cultural inheritance. NWU has unique advantages in the research and transmission of the Chinese traditional culture. SZTU will cooperate with NWU in the cultural research of the Maritime Silk Road and the research on the history and civilization of the countries along the Belt and Road, and keep the culture of Shenzhen alive.
