Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU) attaches great importance to the hands-on ability of the students and strongly encourages them to take part in competitions to enhance their professional skills. Recently, students from College of Big Data and Internet won national prizes in two competitions, showcasing their ability to solve real-life problems and technological innovation capability.
1. The 24th China Robot and Artificial Intelligence Competition (CRAIC)
Held by the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) and undertaken by the Robot Culture and Art Committee of CAAI and Harbin Institute of Technology, the national finals of the 24th China Robot and Artificial Intelligence Competition (CRAIC) were concluded recently. A team named AI_EEG from College of Big Data and Internet won the national second prize (AI Innovation Category) with its project “Emotional EEG classification based on high performance brain-like modular echo state network”.
Instructed by Prof. Wang Junsong, the team consists of three sophomores Yang Liuyi, Li Dawei and Wu Tianpeng. The team members started their research in mid-April, and after two and a half months of thorough preparation, they entered the national finals and competed with more than 260 graduate and undergraduate participants.

Based on the modular structural features of brain neural networks, the project proposes a brain-like modular echo state network model and applies the model to emotional electroencephalogram (EEG) classification. The results show that the model improves the accuracy of EEG-based emotion classification and serves as an effective method for emotion recognition, which is conducive to further development and application of related technologies.

The team members said that the competition tested their professional knowledge and ability in computer science, automation technology, intelligent control, intelligent computing, etc., enhanced their innovative thinking to solve practical problems by using and improving AI technology, and helped them research into trending social issues with forward-looking mindsets and advanced technologies.
2. RoboMaster University Championship (RMUC)
SZTU’s team named HJ attended RoboMaster University Championship (RMUC) for the first time this year and won one national third prize, one provincial second prize (Southern Division), five third prizes (Robots Combat), one national second prize (Infantry Racing & Smart Shooting) and one provincial first prize (Infantry Racing & Smart Shooting). Hosted by DJI, the world’s leading drone manufacturer, and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, RMUC attracted 54 teams from universities across China this year.

Supported by SZTU Youth League Committee and College of Big Data and Internet, HJ aims to encourage more students to develop their interest in robotics and AI and their spirit of craftsmanship. HJ has one operation group and three R&D groups focusing on mechanics, electrical control and vision respectively. The team consists of students from various colleges of SZTU who are interested in mechanical structure design, IoT control, computer vision, and team management. All robots participating in the competition were designed, developed, assembled and programmed by the students themselves.
