On October 20, the first English Public Speaking Contest for Labor Union Members of Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU) was successfully concluded. Prof. Zhang Yanhong, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and secretary of Committee for Discipline Inspection of SZTU, was present at the contest and awarded the winners.

Prof. Zhang Yanhong said that the contest aims to enhance the professional competence and cross-cultural communication skills of the faculty members as well as mutual exchange and interaction, thus building a sound environment for improving teaching quality, scientific research and culture construction of SZTU. There were 25 faculty members from different departments competing in the contest, among whom 14 entered the final round and showcased the excellence of our faculty. In the future, SZTU Labor Union will organize more competitions featuring higher education and teaching as well as activities for culture construction among the faculty members to give full play to their talents.

The final consisted of two parts, namely impromptu speech and Q&A session. The contestants were required to draw lots to determine the topic and sequence, and then each gave a 3-minute impromptu speech. Afterwards, the judges asked each contestant two questions about the speech and the contestant was required to give each answer within 1 minute.

The judges are from School of Foreign Languages, including Vice Dean Zhong Ling, Prof. Liang Jie, Prof. Jiang Yicun, and foreign teacher Fred Stiglingh and Samuel Sadiq. Fred Stiglingh commented that the contestants excel in conveying their ideas on given topics based on their working and living experience, which is very impressive.

The Grand Prize goes to Dong Yuanyuan from International Cooperation & Student Affairs Office. The First Prize winners are Jing Liwen from Department of Academic Affairs and Liao Fangying from International Cooperation & Student Affairs Office. The Second Prize winners are Zhang Yuan from Human Resources Office, Wen Peiling from International Cooperation & Student Affairs Office, and Chai Yihua from College of Urban Transportation and Logistics. The Third Prize winners are Xie Shixiong from Organization Department of Party Affairs Committee, Yuan Yiwei from Department of Academic Affairs, Liu Yandan from Admissions Office, and Shi Huihuai from College of Urban Transportation and Logistics. The Honorable Mention winners are Wang Junting and Li Yuxuan from International Cooperation & Student Affairs Office, Chen Guofen from Quality and Standards Academy, and Feng Xiaolin from Department of Academic Affairs.
