SZTU students win multiple awards

Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU) has spread good news recently. Students have won Honorable Mention in the 2021 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) / Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM), and National Second Prize in the 6th China Collegiate Computing Contest.

1. Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) / Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM)

Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) / Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM), held by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications, is an international contest designed to provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to improve their modeling, problem-solving and writing skills. They are required to apply mathematics to model, develop and communicate a solution to a specified problem in groups of three.

Students from College of Big Data and Internet won 2 Honorable Mentions and 8 Successful Participants. It is the first time for SZTU students to participate in MCM/ICM. They clarify, analyze and propose solutions to real-world open-ended problems such as designing a UAV system to battle the wildfires in Australia, evaluating and optimizing the food system of a country and so on.

The annual competition attracted 26,112 teams this year from 22 countries and regions including the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Singapore. SZTU students competed with participants from many well-known universities including Oxford University, Columbia University, University of Waterloo, University of New South Wales, Nanyang Technological University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and South China University of Technology.

Over the past year, College of Big Data and Internet opened optional courses in mathematical modeling and held many mathematical modeling activities to train students’ mathematical thinking to analyze and deal with problems, enhance students’ teamwork and make students understand the important role of mathematical modeling in solving practical problems.

2. The 6th China Collegiate Computing Contest — Group Programming Ladder Tournament (GPLT)

The competition aims to improve students’ computer problem-solving skills, enhance their programming ability and teamwork. A total of 1,100 teams and more than 10,000 students from 347 colleges and universities across the country participated in the competition this year.

Students from College of Big Data and Internet won 1 National Team Third Prize, 2 National Individual Second Prizes, 5 National Individual Third Prizes, and 3 Guangdong Provincial Team Third Prizes.
