The 9th China (Shenzhen) International Conference on Optical Fiber Sensor Technology and Application was held in Shenzhen from October 31 to November 2. Sponsored by Chinese Society for Optical Engineering (CSOE) and organized by several institutions including Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU), the conference is held annually and has widespread influence in the academia. This is the first time the conference has been held outside Beijing.

Before the conference, the CSOE Optical Fiber Sensing Technology Committee of Experts and Chinese Optical Fiber Sensing Technology and Industrial Innovation Alliance held a general meeting and the first session of the second Standing Council. Prof. Ruan Shuangchen, president of SZTU, was appointed as Vice President of the Council, and Prof. Chen Zhichao from Sino-German College of Intelligent Manufacturing of SZTU was appointed as Standing Member of the Council.

Professor Liao Yanbiao from Tsinghua University, Academician Wang Wei from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, Academician Jiang Desheng from Wuhan University of Technology, Professor Zhang Weixu from Beihang University, and Professor Ruan Shuangchen served as chairmen of the conference. More than 300 experts and representatives from universities, research institutes and enterprises across the country attended the conference. The participants conducted discussions on the application fields of optical fiber sensor technology, including smart grid, civil engineering, emergency and safety, and rail transit, aiming to establish industry-university-research cooperation in the field of optical fiber sensing.

At the opening ceremony of the conference, Prof. Xu Gang, vice president of SZTU, reviewed the significance of this year as the 40th anniversary of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and stated that as an emerging university of applied sciences in Shenzhen, SZTU will keep up with the times, give full play to its disciplinary advantages in the field of applied sciences, and continue to deepen integration of industry and education as its educational model. The university is determined to cultivate diverse high-level talents of applied sciences, precisely serving the development needs of Shenzhen Municipality, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and even the whole nation.

Prof. Chen Zhichao presented a keynote report on the latest research progress of fiber-optic chemical sensor technology, introducing related research background and new kinds of optical fiber sensors. He unveiled his new research on developing fiber-optic chemical sensor technology for detection and explored prospects for future researches such as optimization of chemical film coating technology and discovery of new materials.

This conference consists of seven sub-forums and more than 60 lectures, where experts and scholars gathered to discuss latest research progress, achievements and hotspot issues. Over 20 companies participated in the event to exhibit their latest technological products. The conference promotes communication and cooperation between universities and top research teams, institutes and enterprises, deepens exchanges among technical talents in the academia and industry, and encourages them to explore joint researches on cutting-edge technologies, share scientific and technological achievements, and carry out practical cooperation.
